Anonymous sent: Hey, I was contemplating reading the Rick Riordan Percy Jackson books, but I'm a smidgen confused on which one I should start? Thanks a bunch, hope you have a great day!
I guess the answer would be it all depends on you, what you like to read, how you read, etc.
the books are cut into two series- the original percy jackson series (the lightning thief, sea of monsters, the titans curse, battle of the labryinth, the last olympian), and then the sequel series, heroes of olympus (lost hero, son of neptune, mark of athena, house of hades and the future blood of olympus).
CONSENSUS from the fandom is that the first books have superior writing in the technical sense and plot structure, but heroes of olympus is more interesting overall in terms of characters (multiple povs and diverse main cast of characters vs. the original series only having percy as a pov, and only really having him, annabeth, and grover as mains).
honestly you can start with heroes of olympus with just reading summaries of the original series’ books and you’ll be fine- not much plot stuff from the original series is brought over except for more obscure supplementary content stuff OR stuff that is so tiny that you probably completely forgot about it. (The exception to this is probably The Titan’s Curse, which has our intros to Thalia, Bianca, and Nico, butttt I may be biased).
so if you’re someone who likes to read things in order/get all info, or you read about it and think you’d enjoy it- then start with lightning thief and go on the traditional way. otherwise, i’d say skip right to heroes of olympus with the lost hero, and read the first series afterwards if you feel like it.
